Mahindra Thar Roxx: Features, Variants, and Price in India

A note on figures: The Thar Roxx lineup spans 21 variants across engine, transmission, and drivetrain combinations, and Mahindra has added special editions since launch. The figures below reflect the most recently reported ex-showroom range as of this article's last verified date — always confirm current pricing and exact trim availability with a dealer before booking.

The Thar Roxx is Mahindra's answer to the biggest practical complaint about the original three-door Thar: no rear doors. Built as a genuinely larger, longer-wheelbase 5-door version rather than a simple stretch, the Roxx keeps the two-door Thar's off-road identity while turning it into something usable as an actual family vehicle — a segment shift that's made it one of the most talked-about SUV launches in India in the last two years.

Petrol vs diesel, and where 4x4 actually shows up

The Thar Roxx is offered with two very different engines: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol (Mahindra's "mStallion") producing up to 174 bhp, and a 2.2-litre diesel ("mHawk") producing up to roughly 172 bhp with noticeably stronger low-end torque — the one most serious off-roaders tend to pick. Both are available with manual or automatic transmissions, but genuine 4x4 with a low-range transfer case is reserved for specific diesel variants (MX5 Diesel 4X4 and above) rather than being standard across the range — worth checking closely if off-road capability is the reason you're buying a Thar in the first place.

Variant by variant

MX1 (Base petrol) from ₹12.25L

The most affordable way into a Thar Roxx — 2WD only, with the core safety kit and a touchscreen, but without the drivetrain hardware serious off-roaders come for.

MX3 / MX5 Mid-range

Steps up with a sunroof, 360-degree camera, cruise control, and tyre pressure monitoring. The MX5 Diesel 4X4 is the first variant in the range where genuine low-range four-wheel drive becomes available.

AX3L / AX5L / AX7L Upper trims

The AX-series trims bring in the more advanced safety suite — automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive high-beam — alongside automatic transmission options in both petrol and diesel.

AX7L Diesel AT 4X4 (Top) up to ₹22.06L

The range-topping configuration: diesel engine, automatic transmission, and full 4x4 with every driver-assistance feature Mahindra offers on the Roxx — the version most cross-shopped against the XUV700's higher trims.

Safety and cabin tech

Higher Thar Roxx trims carry a genuinely modern driver-assistance suite for the price bracket — automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and adaptive high-beam assist — alongside the expected touchscreen infotainment, a sunroof, and a 360-degree camera. It's a significant step up from the older three-door Thar, which was comparatively spartan on the tech front even in its top trim.

The Roxx's biggest shift isn't a spec sheet number — it's that Mahindra built genuine rear doors and a proper second row into a nameplate that used to be, functionally, a two-seater with jump seats.

Who it competes with

The Thar Roxx occupies an unusual competitive space — its lifestyle-off-roader styling puts it up against the Force Gurkha, while its size and pricing overlap with mainstream 5-seater SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and even Mahindra's own Scorpio Classic. Buyers cross-shopping the Roxx are typically choosing between genuine off-road capability (where it has few rivals at this price) and outright cabin refinement or third-row seating (where more conventional SUVs pull ahead).
