Maruti Suzuki sells one in every two cars bought in India. When Maruti changes direction, the entire market tilts with it. And 2026 is the year Maruti changes direction. The brand that built its empire on affordable, efficient petrol cars is now launching its first EV, its first flex-fuel engine, and refreshing the bestselling compact SUV in the country.
The headline is the e Vitara — Maruti's first fully electric car for India, arriving in January 2026. But the more interesting story might be the Fronx Flex Fuel, which represents something nobody else in India is offering: a car that runs happily on anything from pure petrol to an 85% ethanol blend. As India's ethanol blending programme matures, flex-fuel compatibility will matter more and more.
The cars that define the year
Maruti Suzuki e Vitara — The One Everyone Was Waiting For
The e Vitara arrives on the HEARTECT-e skateboard platform with two battery sizes: a 49 kWh standard pack and a 61 kWh long-range unit claiming 543 km. Power outputs of 142 bhp and 172 bhp place it firmly in the mid-size EV SUV class. Level 2 ADAS is standard across the range, and the 360-degree camera system fills a gap many rivals at this price point still haven't addressed. Priced from ₹17.5 lakh upwards.
Fronx Flex-Fuel — Running on Sugarcane
The Fronx Flex Fuel uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine compatible with ethanol-petrol blends up to E85 — 85% ethanol, a byproduct of sugarcane processing, dramatically cheaper than petrol in sugarcane-producing states. For buyers in Maharashtra, Karnataka, or UP — where ethanol infrastructure is growing — this is a meaningful running-cost advantage. Pricing expected close to the standard Fronx with a slight premium.
Brezza Facelift — Still the One to Beat
The Brezza is India's best-selling compact SUV, and the facelift keeps it sharp. Expect reprofiled headlights and tail lamps, revised bumpers, new alloy wheels, and the same underbody CNG tank setup from the Victoris — which moves the tank away from the boot, recovering usable luggage space. The 103 hp 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual and automatic options carries over. Priced from around ₹8.7 lakh.
What's coming next: the electric MPV

Beyond the 2026 confirmed launches, Maruti is working on codenamed YMC — the brand's first all-electric MPV — a three-row people-carrier built on the HEARTECT-e platform with 40 kWh and 60 kWh battery options, targeting up to 500 km of range. Expected pricing between ₹18 lakh and ₹30 lakh, a launch in early 2028, and a rival list that includes the Kia Carens EV and BYD eMax 7.
Maruti selling an EV was a question of when, not if. 2026 is the year the answer arrived.
The bigger picture: Maruti is approaching electrification from three angles simultaneously — pure EVs, flex-fuel for markets with strong ethanol infrastructure, and hybrids through its Toyota partnership. That's a more complete hedge than any other Indian brand has managed, and it reflects a company that's thought carefully about how varied India's energy landscape really is outside the top eight cities.
