India's premium MPV segment has quietly become one of the most interesting three-way fights in the entire market. On one side sits the Toyota Innova Hycross — the nameplate that basically defined the category. On the other, two very different challengers: the Maruti Suzuki Invicto, which is mechanically almost identical to the Hycross but wears a different badge, and the Kia Carens, a genuinely separate design that undercuts both on price while still packing in real features.
The honest starting point is that these three cars don't actually compete on price at all — there's roughly a ₹14 lakh gap between the cheapest Carens and the priciest Invicto. What they compete on is positioning: all three are aimed at families who've outgrown a compact SUV and want three genuine rows of space. Which one is right depends far more on budget and priorities than a simple "best overall" answer would suggest.

Here's the detail most buyers don't realise until they're deep into research: the Maruti Invicto and Toyota Innova Hycross are built on the same platform, with the same 2.0-litre TNGA hybrid powertrain underneath. Maruti doesn't manufacture the Invicto itself — it's essentially a rebadged, Maruti-spec version of the Hycross, sold through Nexa dealerships to buyers who want Toyota's hybrid reliability with Maruti's service network.
This means the real Hycross-vs-Invicto decision usually comes down to two things: which brand's dealership network is more convenient to you, and how much you value small trim-level differences — the Invicto's petrol variant, for instance, has been reported with slightly different power outputs across trims (some listings show 150 bhp, others 186 bhp combined output, depending on variant and testing methodology), while the Hycross keeps a more consistent spec sheet.

The Carens occupies genuinely different territory — it's not really cross-shopped against the other two by most buyers, since it starts at less than the Hycross's cheapest variant. Where it does compete directly is against the base petrol Hycross trims, where the price gap narrows considerably once you start comparing similarly-equipped versions.
Where each one wins
The Carens is the only one of the three offered with a proper diesel engine and a manual transmission option, which matters if you cover serious highway distance and want the lowest running cost per kilometre. It also comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, ventilated seats, and an air purifier even at relatively accessible trim levels — a genuinely well-equipped cabin for the price. What it doesn't offer is a hybrid powertrain, and its 216-litre boot is meaningfully smaller than both rivals.
The Hycross spans the widest price range of the three by far — from a genuinely affordable fleet-spec base variant to a fully-loaded ZX(O) that competes with luxury MPVs on features. That range means there's a Hycross variant for almost every budget between roughly ₹19 lakh and ₹32 lakh, which neither rival can match. It also carries the strongest brand reputation for long-term reliability in the segment.
The Invicto is hybrid-only from the base variant up — you don't have to pay extra or step up a trim to get the efficiency benefit, unlike the Hycross where hybrid starts partway up the range. It also edges out both rivals on boot space at 239 litres, and comes exclusively through Maruti's Nexa premium retail network, which some buyers find a smoother ownership experience than either Toyota or Kia's standard dealership approach.
Mileage: the hybrid gap is real
The Invicto's claimed 23.24 kmpl isn't a marketing number that evaporates in real-world driving — hybrid MPVs consistently outperform their petrol-only rivals in stop-start city traffic, which is exactly where most Indian MPV buyers actually spend their time.
Both the Hycross hybrid variants and the Invicto share the same underlying TNGA hybrid system and post similar claimed efficiency figures in the low-to-mid 20s kmpl. The Carens, lacking any hybrid option, tops out around 19.5 kmpl on its efficient diesel manual variant — respectable, but a clear step behind what the hybrid duo offers in city conditions.
The verdict, by buyer type
- Tightest budget, want diesel or manual: Kia Carens — nothing else in this comparison gets close to its price, and the diesel manual is a genuinely efficient long-distance option.
- Want the widest choice of trims and the strongest resale/reliability reputation: Innova Hycross — especially if you're not sure yet whether you want hybrid or petrol, since it's the only one of the three offering both.
- Want hybrid efficiency without paying Toyota's premium at the top end, and prefer Maruti's service network: Invicto — it's essentially "Hycross hybrid, Maruti flavour," at a price that undercuts the Hycross's own top-spec hybrid variants.
The honest closing point: if you can stretch your budget into hybrid territory at all, both the Hycross and Invicto will save meaningfully on fuel over a typical ownership period compared to the Carens — the question is really just which badge and dealership experience you'd rather deal with for the next several years.
