Toyota India 2026: Electric Beginnings and an Icon Reborn

Toyota has always played a long game in India. While competitors chase headlines, Toyota has quietly built one of the most loyal owner bases in the country — on the back of the Fortuner's invincibility, the Innova's reliability, and hybrid technology nobody else offered at this price point. In 2026, that patience is paying off differently: Toyota is ready to go electric, launch an icon's successor, and broaden its SUV range from below ₹16 lakh all the way past ₹70 lakh.
The year's centrepiece is the Urban Cruiser eBella — Toyota's first battery electric vehicle for India — arriving in mid-2026. It shares its HEARTECT-e platform with the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, but Toyota has tuned its own suspension, software, and interior to carve out a distinct character. Further up the range, the new-generation Hilux arrives in July, and a next-gen Fortuner waits just around the corner.

Urban Cruiser eBella — Toyota's Electric Debut
The eBella is Toyota's first EV for India, arriving with two motor options (142 bhp and 172 bhp) and two battery sizes: a 49 kWh standard pack and a 61 kWh long-range unit claiming 543 km. Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera are standard across most trims. Priced between ₹16 lakh and ₹23.60 lakh, it competes with the Tata Curvv EV and Hyundai Creta Electric — but with Toyota's ownership reputation as a quiet differentiator.
New Toyota Hilux — Bolder, Bigger, Still Diesel
The new-generation Hilux landed in India on July 28, 2026. Built on Toyota's IMV platform, the design is substantially more upright and squared-off, drawing from the Land Cruiser family's "Tough and Agile" philosophy. The India-spec model carries a 2.8-litre turbodiesel paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Pricing expected between ₹35 lakh and ₹40 lakh. The new Hilux's design is widely read as a preview of the next-gen Fortuner.
Urban Cruiser Hyryder 7-Seat — The Family Size
Toyota has been testing an extended-wheelbase Hyryder with a proper third row, and a 2026 launch is expected. It will offer the same powertrain trio as the 5-seater — 1.5-litre mild hybrid, strong hybrid, and petrol-CNG — with AllGrip AWD on hybrid variants. The strong hybrid version is compelling: genuine three-row space targeting the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, and Mahindra XUV 7XO.
On the horizon: next-gen Fortuner and the Taisor hybrid

The next-generation Fortuner is the car Indian buyers are watching most closely. Toyota hasn't confirmed a 2026 India launch, but the new Hilux's arrival — sharing design language and platform DNA with the upcoming Fortuner — makes a late-2026 or early-2027 debut look plausible. The new Fortuner is expected to offer petrol, diesel, 48V mild-hybrid, and potentially a full-hybrid drivetrain.

At the more accessible end, the Urban Cruiser Taisor is expected to gain a series hybrid variant — the 1.2-litre petrol engine acts as a generator while an electric motor drives the wheels, claiming up to 35 kmpl. It's the same tech appearing in the Maruti Fronx hybrid. Expected between ₹10 lakh and ₹15 lakh, making the Taisor one of the most fuel-efficient compact SUVs in India.
